Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work (And What Does)

Let’s cut through the fluff. It’s New Year’s Eve. While everyone else is focused on their next drink or their next party, there’s a different breed of achievers who know something most don’t: the secret to a successful year is not in resolutions, it’s in vision. And if you’re reading this, I know you’re ready to stop wasting time on the same old broken promises to yourself and start the year with a clear, actionable plan that actually works.

Let’s talk about why New Year’s resolutions fail—and how you can do better.

Resolutions Are for Amateurs

The common approach to New Year’s resolutions is simple: set a goal, work hard toward it, and hope for the best. Yet, for high achievers like you, this approach often leads to burnout, frustration, or feelings of inadequacy when things don’t go as planned. But why does this happen? Because we tend to focus on the “how” rather than the “why.”

That’s where vision comes in.

Unlike resolutions, which are typically short-term and outcome-driven, a vision is a long-term, holistic approach that is deeply connected to your values, purpose, and the person you want to become. A vision isn’t something that fades after a few weeks. It’s something that evolves with you, guides your decisions, and gives you the clarity to act with intention.

The Missing Ingredient: A Vision That Sticks

Instead of setting goals that fade away by February, why not set a vision that lasts? This is the game-changer I talk about in The North Star Method. Vision isn’t a feel-good concept—it’s a framework that gives you direction, purpose, and the will to act when the going gets tough.

Here’s the truth: vision is the thing that gets you out of bed in the morning. It’s the mental blueprint that guides your every decision. It’s why I went from a smoker with no energy and no direction in my 20s to a professional bodybuilder in my 40s. Not by setting arbitrary goals, but by creating a vision of who I wanted to become and using that vision to inform my every choice.

You’ve heard of people who “wing it” and still succeed. But they’re rare. Most people wander through life reacting to circumstances instead of designing the life they want.

Why You Need More Than Resolutions

You might be thinking, “Jessica, I get it. But how do I turn a vision into action?”

Easy. By aligning your energy with that vision. And I’m not talking about some airy-fairy, “just think positive” nonsense. I’m talking about taking strategic action that moves you closer to the person you’ve already envisioned. I’m talking about clarity that fuels confidence, and a roadmap that helps you take the next step when the distractions of life come knocking.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Create a Vision That Inspires You – Not a wish, not a vague idea, but a crystal-clear picture of who you’re becoming. What’s that person doing? Where are they going? What are they thinking? Be specific. Don’t just dream about it—see it.

  2. Focus on What Actually Matters – Once you’ve got your vision, toss everything else aside. Forget about the distractions. Put your energy where it counts: on the actions that will get you closer to your vision.

  3. Take Daily Action with Confidence – You don’t need to “try harder.” You just need to act in alignment with the vision you’ve created. And when you do that consistently, results follow.
